The Boon van der Starp room is named after Madurodam's founder: Ms Bep Boon -van der Starp. She was a member of the board of the Dutch Students’ Sanatorium. In the sanatorium, students with tuberculosis could study while they were recovering. Mrs Boon-van der Starp wanted to find a way to raise funds for the sanatorium and came up with the idea for the miniature city.
